Few artists have reinvented themselves as successfully as David Byrne, and at The Piece Hall the former Talking Heads visionary proved that creative curiosity remains his greatest strength.

Making his long-awaited headline debut at the Halifax venue, Byrne captivated a sold-out crowd of 6,000 with a performance that effortlessly blurred the line between art-rock spectacle and intimate celebration. Moving seamlessly between new material and the songs that have defined an extraordinary career, he delivered a set that felt as fresh as it did nostalgic. Opening with the sublime Heaven, Byrne immediately established the night's dreamlike mood before introducing songs from his acclaimed new album Who Is The Sky?. Tracks including Everybody Laughs and When We Are Singing slotted naturally alongside decades-old classics, underlining the remarkable consistency of his songwriting. If the newer material showcased an artist still pushing forwards, the evening's biggest moments came from a seemingly endless catalogue of iconic songs. And She Was, Like Humans Do and the universally adored This Must Be The Place prompted huge singalongs, while the angular groove of Psycho Killer, the relentless energy of Life During Wartime and the euphoric Once In A Lifetime transformed the historic courtyard into one giant open-air dancefloor. After a rapturous ovation, Byrne returned for an encore that left little doubt why his live shows continue to attract such devoted audiences. Everybody's Coming To My House provided one final burst of joyous optimism before the unmistakable funk of Burning Down The House brought the night to a triumphant close. Earlier, acclaimed singer-songwriter Anna Calvi delivered a mesmerising support set packed with her trademark intensity. The evening's most unexpected moment arrived when Byrne joined her on stage for a stunning duet of Strange Weather, a collaboration that drew one of the loudest receptions of the night. Balancing innovation with timeless classics has never been an easy trick to pull off, but David Byrne made it seem effortless. At a venue renowned for unforgettable summer shows, this was another destined to linger long in the memory.
