Berlin's underground has always had a habit of producing bands that feel equal parts art project and sonic assault, and Die Anstalt are already proving they belong in that lineage. Now signed to City Slang, the synth-punk trio arrive with news that their sought-after, self-titled debut, Die Anstalt, will receive a deluxe reissue on September 25, introducing one of Germany's most compelling new guitar bands to a much wider audience.

Formed in 2023 by vocalist Carmen Redeker, guitarist and synth player Jakob Feyerherm, and bassist Emanuele Mattei, the trio have wasted little time building momentum. Following the release of 2024's Rat Race EP, their independently released debut album disappeared almost instantly, its initial pressing of just 300 vinyl copies selling out and earning a swift repress through word of mouth alone. Musically, Die Anstalt occupy the space where jagged post-punk, abrasive EBM and icy industrial electronics collide. Echoes of Malaria!, DAF, Xmal Deutschland and the modern darkness of Boy Harsher ripple through the record, but the band never feel trapped by nostalgia. Instead, they channel those influences into something urgent, physical and unmistakably contemporary, with songs that wrestle with political anxiety, social alienation and the strange theatre of modern life. Their latest single, Kalter Schweiß, captures that tension perfectly, pairing mechanical grooves with an atmosphere that feels simultaneously claustrophobic and impossible to ignore. It's another reminder that Die Anstalt are more interested in provoking movement than simply paying tribute to the past. The band's growing reputation has been built the hard way, through relentless touring and explosive live performances, earning an invitation to join noise-rock veterans A Place To Bury Strangers across the UK and Ireland this summer. They'll also return home for a headline show at Berlin's legendary SO36 in November, another milestone for a band whose rise has been driven almost entirely by instinct, intensity and word of mouth. For City Slang, it's a timely signing. For everyone else, it's a chance to catch up with one of Berlin's most exhilarating new bands before the secret gets out.
