David Gray proved that time has only sharpened his songwriting on Saturday night, delivering a stirring, career-spanning set to a sold-out Cardiff Castle as part of TK Maxx Presents Depot Live.

Against the imposing backdrop of the Welsh capital's historic fortress, Gray looked every bit the seasoned performer, effortlessly guiding thousands through more than three decades of introspective folk-pop. His biggest Welsh headline show to date felt less like a nostalgia trip and more like a reminder of why his songs continue to resonate. Drawing heavily from across his catalogue, Gray balanced familiar favourites with deeper cuts, weaving together The One I Love, My Oh My, Be Mine, White Ladder, You're The World To Me and This Year's Love. The arrangements remained faithful to their originals while allowing the band room to breathe, giving even the most recognisable tracks a renewed sense of warmth. The night's defining moment arrived with Babylon. As the opening chords rang out, Cardiff Castle became a giant choir, with thousands singing every word back to the stage. It was one of those rare festival moments where artist and audience dissolved into one, the song sounding as vital today as it did at the turn of the millennium. Gray also paused for a heartfelt tribute to the late Bonnie Tyler, offering an understated rendition of Total Eclipse of the Heart that drew a warm response from the home crowd. Rather than feeling like a detour, it added a poignant local touch to an evening rooted in reflection before he brought proceedings to a fitting close with the soaring Sail Away. Earlier, The Divine Comedy set the tone with their trademark blend of orchestral pop, dry humour and effortless charm. Naturally, National Express was greeted like an old friend, providing an upbeat opening that perfectly complemented the evening ahead. There are few artists capable of commanding a stage with such quiet confidence as David Gray. At Cardiff Castle, there were no gimmicks or grandstanding, just timeless songs, delivered with conviction to an audience more than happy to sing every word back.
