Two of our favourite new songs on repeat on the Gigshack stereo are by the French singer Yael Naim.
Multicolor is so cool, mesmerising and chilled building steadily into a trance like dance track. If you close your eyes you can see the shapes and colors, the multicolours. It's the drums that really drive it. I think it may be djembe drums, but its probably a combination, it gives it a slight feel of Massive Attacks 'Karmacoma' or Tricky's 'Overcome', but that's just because of those drums. Yael's voice draws you in and gives the track a sweetness and chilled vibe. I love the rap/rhyme in the middle ‘Look. Everything you took. Coming like a Rook. I wouldn’t hate you just because it's written in a book. Don't eat what they puke. Love is what I cook. What you ever wanted is so simple, have a look.’ ‘La fille pas cool’ is sung in french and maybe that is why to me at least it sounds a bit more like Christuine and the Queens, which is no bad thing. The vocals sound lazy, relaxed, laid back. She has such a good range to her voice, soft and clear. The production is stunning, the whole thing has such a warm feeling. All available to listen to now on spotify and others. I can't really wait for the album entitled ‘Solair’, due to be released on 20th Feb this year or the tour, which starts mid March. We’ll aim to get to the St Malo or Paris show in April and do a full review. I guess these 2 songs will have to tide us over until then.
