Mitski

Mitski Miyawaki (born September 27, 1990) is a Japanese-American singer-songwriter known for confessional lyrics and a stark, cinematic sound that blends indie rock, art pop, and folk influences. Born in Japan to a Japanese mother and an American father, she spent much of her childhood in the United States and moved frequently. She studied music at SUNY Purchase College, where she began releasing music under the name Mitski. Her early work built a cult following, culminating in a breakout with the 2014 album Bury Me at Makeout Creek, followed by Puberty 2 (2016) and Be the Cowboy (2018). Each record pushed further into intimate, emotionally raw territory, earning her widespread critical acclaim. Her later albums, including Laurel Hell (2022), continued to fuse sharp introspection with melodic, exploratory production. Mitski is known for her distinctive voice, precise lyricism, and ongoing exploration of identity, love, and alienation.
