Beirut

Beirut is an American musical project founded by Zach Condon in 2006. Known for its eclectic blend of indie rock, Balkan folk, and world music influences, Beirut emerged as a distinctive and innovative voice in the indie music scene. Condon, originally from Santa Fe, New Mexico, was inspired by a wide range of musical styles, particularly Eastern European and French chanson, which played a significant role in shaping Beirut's early sound. The debut album, *Gulag Orkestar*, released in 2006, was met with critical acclaim and introduced audiences to Beirut's rich, orchestral arrangements and Condon's signature crooning vocals. The success of the album was followed by *The Flying Club Cup* in 2007, which took cues from French music and further established Beirut's reputation for globally inspired music. Subsequent releases, including *The Rip Tide* (2011), *No No No* (2015), and *Gallipoli* (2019), showcased the project's evolving sound while maintaining its roots in heartfelt, internationally influenced compositions. Beirut is particularly praised for its use of traditional instruments such as the ukulele, flugelhorn, accordion, and brass, which add to the richness and unique character of the music. Over the years, Zach Condon has been the creative force behind Beirut, with a rotating cast of musicians supporting live performances and recordings. Despite personal and health challenges, Condon has continued to develop Beirut's sound, with a loyal following and a respected place in indie and world music spheres.
