Cults
Cults is an American indie pop band formed in 2010 in New York City by guitarist Brian Oblivion and vocalist Madeline Follin. The duo met while studying film at New York University and quickly began making music together, blending retro-tinged pop with elements of shoegaze and experimental rock. Cults gained immediate attention with their debut single "Go Outside," which featured a catchy melody layered over lo-fi production. The track went viral online, leading to a record deal and the release of their self-titled debut album in 2011. The album received widespread acclaim for its nostalgic sound and infectious hooks, establishing Cults as rising stars in the indie music scene. Following their debut, the band released several albums including "Static" in 2013, "Offering" in 2017, and "Host" in 2020. These records showcased a maturation in their sound, incorporating more complex arrangements and introspective lyrics while maintaining their signature dreamy aesthetic. Despite changes in their personal relationship—Oblivion and Follin were a couple when the band was formed but later broke up—they continued to collaborate and evolve musically. Cults remains active, known for their engaging live performances and ability to craft emotionally resonant pop songs with a nostalgic flair.
