Death Cab for Cutie is an American indie rock band formed in 1997 in Bellingham, Washington, by Ben Gibbard. What began as Gibbard’s bedroom project evolved into a four-piece outfit with Chris Walla, Nick Harmer, and Jason McGerr, releasing early albums on Barsuk Records such as Something About Airplanes (1998) and The Photo Album (2001). The group gained wider attention with Transatlanticism (2003) and achieved major-label success with Plans (2005), anchored by the hit “I Will Follow You into the Dark.” Walla left the band in 2014, and Death Cab has continued with new members and releases including Codes and Keys (2011), Kintsugi (2015), Thank You for Today (2018), and Asphalt Meadows (2022). Ben Gibbard is also known for The Postal Service, his collaboration with Jimmy Tamborello. The band’s name comes from a line in the Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour, reflecting its enduring pop and indie rock influences.
