Devin Townsend (born May 5, 1972) is a Canadian musician, producer, and songwriter whose work spans metal, progressive rock, and ambient music. He first gained attention as a guitarist and producer associated with Steve Vai, and later founded Strapping Young Lad, a ferocious project that helped define Canadian extreme metal. Townsend is renowned for his prolific output and genre-spanning approach, with notable solo and band releases such as Ocean Machine: Biomech, Terria, and the expansive The Devin Townsend Project, as well as the humorous concept album Ziltoid the Omniscient.
