Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley

Jeff Buckley (December 17, 1966 – May 29, 1997) was an American singer-songwriter and guitarist known for his extraordinary vocal range and emotionally charged performances. Born in Orange, California, he was the son of Tim Buckley, a pioneering folk-rock musician, which exposed him to a wide mix of styles from an early age. Buckley moved through the Los Angeles and New York music scenes, building a reputation for powerful live shows and a supple, versatile voice. In 1994 he released Grace, his only completed studio album, which blended rock, folk, jazz, and soul influences and remains a landmark of the 1990s. The album’s breadth and his haunting interpretations—along with standout live performances and the widely celebrated cover of Hallelujah—cemented his reputation posthumously. Buckley died in 1997 at age 30 after accidentally drowning in the Wolf River in Memphis, Tennessee, following a recording session. His brief career left a lasting imprint on alternative and indie rock, and posthumous releases such as You and I (1998) have continued to introduce new listeners to his work.
