The Smiths

Review

Strangeways, Here We Come marks a poignant and reflective end to The Smiths' illustrious career. Released in 1987, this album showcases the band exploring new musical territory while retaining the distinctive lyrical genius of Morrissey and the inventive instrumentation of Johnny Marr. The production on this album is polished, giving it a lush sound that perfectly complements the introspective themes that dominate the lyrics. Songs like "Girlfriend in a Coma" blend melancholic lyrics with catchy melodies, revealing Morrissey's ability to juxtapose despair with infectious rhythms. The album's opener, "The Boy with the Thorn in His Side," sets the tone with its lyrical exploration of alienation and longing, inviting listeners into a world filled with emotional depth. Throughout the album, the guitar work shines, showcasing Marr's talent for crafting memorable riffs and intricate arrangements. This is particularly evident in tracks like "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish," where upbeat instrumentation contrasts with Morrissey’s reflective lyrics about unfulfilled desires. The song structures are varied and dynamic, keeping the listener engaged from start to finish. One of the standout tracks, "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me," delivers a haunting and vulnerable exploration of longing and solitude, encapsulating the essence of The Smiths' sound. The closing track, "I Started Something I Couldn't Finish," carries an air of resolution while simultaneously feeling like an open-ended farewell. Overall, Strangeways, Here We Come serves as both a culmination of The Smiths' artistic journey and a poignant reminder of their impact on the alternative music scene. It balances melancholy with moments of hope and showcases the band's unique ability to blend the personal with the universal. This album remains a timeless classic, resonating with listeners who continue to find solace in its introspective melodies and thought-provoking lyrics.
