Review
Justin Bieber is back. After a brief hiatus from the public eye (well, a sort of hiatus – his Instagram was still very much alive), the Canadian pop sensation has returned with *Swag*, a record that promises a new direction for the 29-year-old superstar. While many have expected this album to reflect the maturity and introspection of his last few releases, *Swag* takes a different route. It's brash, it's bold, and it’s an unapologetic celebration of, well, "swag." Right from the first track, it's clear that Bieber isn’t attempting to reinvent the wheel. There are no deep philosophical musings here, no intimate confessions. Instead, *Swag* is an album that revels in its own sense of fun. The opening track, *"Pop My Collar"*, is a neon-drenched anthem that could easily soundtrack a summer night out in Ibiza. The playful, almost irreverent tone sets the stage for what is to come: an album that's clearly more about enjoying the moment than introspective soul-searching. Throughout *Swag*, Bieber embraces the swagger of his youth with an ease that’s simultaneously charming and a bit cheeky. Tracks like *"Designer Life"* and *"Rollin' With The Best"* showcase his knack for blending pop melodies with hip-hop-inspired beats. His vocal delivery, while still smooth and polished, seems more relaxed – perhaps a sign that he’s feeling more comfortable in his skin after the whirlwind of fame he’s been through. The production is slick, with a heavy dose of synthesizers and bass that nods to contemporary trends in both pop and R\&B. However, it’s hard to ignore the feeling that Bieber is, in some ways, spinning his wheels. Sure, the album delivers a hefty dose of catchy hooks and earworm melodies, but beyond that, there's little that really distinguishes it from the countless other pop records on the market. Some might argue that the album's boldness works in its favour, as it doesn't attempt to be anything more than what it is – a good time. But there’s something a little hollow in the repeated motifs of lavishness and posturing. *Swag* finds Bieber straddling the line between youthful exuberance and a self-aware wink to the audience. It's as though he's saying, "Yes, I know this is a bit ridiculous, but isn’t that what pop is all about?" Perhaps the most notable track in this regard is *"Million Dollar Smile"*, a flirtatious piece that hints at the Justin we all know, with just enough of a sense of irony to make it feel like a knowing pastiche of his own public persona. The standout track, however, is *"Flaunt It"* – a cheeky ode to self-confidence, featuring an infectious chorus and an effortless groove. It’s a moment where the album feels truly authentic, offering a peek behind the curtain at Bieber’s playful side without relying on forced bravado. If there’s a track that encapsulates the spirit of *Swag*, it’s this one. But there is a sense that Bieber's decision to lean heavily into the *"swag"* persona may ultimately undermine the depth that we’ve come to expect from his past work. The album might have worked better as an EP, rather than an entire 12-track journey through confidence and flashy excess. The question, of course, is: does Justin Bieber *need* to show us anything more? His devoted fanbase will no doubt lap up every moment of *Swag*, but it’s harder to imagine this album converting any new listeners. It’s fun, it’s catchy, and it certainly has its moments, but whether it’ll leave a lasting impact remains to be seen. In the end, *Swag* is a reflection of an artist at ease with his place in the pop landscape. It’s Justin Bieber having fun, and while that’s not always a bad thing, it does feel like a bit of a missed opportunity for a more substantial musical statement.

Justin Bieber’s latest album, *Swag*, was released on 12 July 2025 in both the UK and the US, marking his return to a more playful and upbeat pop sound. Recorded primarily at Westlake Recording Studios in Los Angeles, with additional sessions at The Hit Factory in Miami, the album features a polished production style that leans heavily into contemporary R\&B and dance-pop influences. The album was executive produced by Andrew Watt and Benny Blanco, with contributions from a roster of familiar names including Skrillex, Tayla Parx, and The Monsters & Strangerz. Their combined efforts give *Swag* a cohesive but dynamic feel, packed with slick beats, glossy synths, and an air of effortless cool. Though it departs from the more introspective tone of Bieber's recent work, *Swag* embraces a lighter, more confident persona—cementing his place once again at the centre of the global pop conversation.
