The Autumn Stone

Review

*The Autumn Stone* is not an album by Faces, but rather a posthumous compilation by Small Faces, released in 1969 after the group had disbanded. Often incorrectly credited to Faces due to the overlap in band members—particularly Ronnie Lane and Ian McLagan—the record serves as a retrospective of the Small Faces’ brief but influential career. The double album showcases the band’s evolution, weaving through their early mod anthems, psychedelic explorations, and more reflective later work. Standout tracks like "Itchycoo Park," "Lazy Sunday," and "Afterglow (Of Your Love)" highlight Steve Marriott’s raw, soulful vocals and the group’s flair for inventive arrangements. Notably, *The Autumn Stone* includes previously unreleased material and live recordings, offering a deeper look at the band’s versatility and vibrancy. While it may lack the cohesion of a traditional studio album, as a compilation it captures the spirit and breadth of one of Britain’s most dynamic 60s rock bands. For fans of British rock with soulful energy and psychedelic undertones, this album remains an essential listen.

Info

*The Autumn Stone* is a posthumous double album by the British band Small Faces, released in the UK on November 14, 1969, by Immediate Records. The album was never officially released in the United States. It is a compilation that includes hit singles, selected album tracks, previously unreleased studio recordings, and live performances. It peaked at number 20 on the UK Albums Chart. Since it was not released in the US, it did not chart there. Most of the studio tracks were recorded at Olympic Studios and IBC Studios in London between 1967 and 1968. The live recordings were from a performance at Newcastle City Hall in 1968. The album was produced by the band members themselves in collaboration with Glyn Johns and Andrew Loog Oldham. The record is notable for capturing the final phase of the Small Faces before they disbanded in 1969, shortly before members Ronnie Lane, Ian McLagan, and Kenney Jones joined forces with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood to form Faces.
