Pink Floyd at Pompeii - MCMLXXII (2025 Mix)

Pink Floyd

Review

There are anniversaries, and then there is *Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII (2025 Mix)*, a remastered resurrection that feels less like a reissue and more like an archaeological revelation. Nearly fifty-four years on from their silent séance among the weathered stones of the ancient amphitheatre, Pink Floyd’s spectral performance has been lovingly dusted off, meticulously rebalanced and reborn for a new generation. From the moment the opening bars of “Echoes” ripple through your speakers, you sense the difference. Producer Andy Jackson has coaxed fresh life from the original analogue tapes, peeling back layers of hiss and rumble without sacrificing the raw ambience of that moonlit night in Pompeii. David Gilmour’s guitar, once veiled in cavernous reverb, now sings with crystalline clarity; you can almost hear the metallic tang of the Roman air mixing with the echoes of his sustain. Roger Waters’ bass, historically a subterranean pulse, steps forward with newfound warmth, anchoring the proceedings with a tactile heft. On “Careful with That Axe, Eugene,” the whispered paranoia and spine-tingling scream cut through the amphitheatre’s shadows with unnerving proximity—as though you’re crouched in the wings, waiting for the next jolt of terror. Nick Mason’s drumming maintains its stoic precision, but here, every cymbal crash and tom-thud resonates with purpose, sculpting the spaciousness of the amphitheatre like a percussive architect. Richard Wright’s keyboards—often the unsung glue of the ensemble—bask in the limelight, their organ swells and electric piano motifs blossoming in sumptuous stereo. This 2025 Mix does more than sharpen audio; it deepens the narrative. Beneath the stones and flickering candlelight, you sense the seismic tension of a band at its creative zenith, daring to play to an audience of ghosts. The ambience track, too long neglected, has been revived: distant night sounds—rustling leaves, murmured wind—are woven back into the tapestry, reminding us that music, however immortal, still dances with the natural world. In an era of fleeting digital streams and disposable playlists, *MCMLXXII (2025 Mix)* stands as an act of devotion. It invites us to pause, listen, and remember that even the greatest monuments can be rediscovered. This isn’t merely a new coat of paint on a classic; it’s an excavation in sound—and Pink Floyd’s Pompeii still reverberates with breathtaking grandeur.

Info

Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII (2025 Mix) is a newly restored and remixed edition of the band's iconic 1972 concert film and live album, capturing their performance in the ancient Roman amphitheatre of Pompeii, Italy. Filmed over four days in October 1971, this unique concert featured no audience, allowing the band to deliver an intimate and atmospheric set amidst the historic ruins. The original film was directed by Adrian Maben and has now been meticulously restored in 4K by Lana Topham, with the audio remixed by Steven Wilson to enhance the sound quality while preserving the authenticity of the original performance. The 2025 Mix was released on May 2, 2025, in both the UK and the US, available across multiple formats including CD, vinyl, Blu-ray, DVD, digital audio, and for the first time, in Dolby Atmos. The album features classic tracks such as "Echoes," "A Saucerful of Secrets," and "One of These Days," along with bonus material including an unedited version of "A Saucerful of Secrets" and an alternate take of "Careful With That Axe, Eugene." This release marks a significant milestone for Pink Floyd, as it became their seventh UK No. 1 album and their first since 2014’s The Endless River. The restored film and accompanying live album offer both longtime fans and new listeners an immersive experience of Pink Floyd's pioneering artistry during a pivotal moment in their career.
